# Writer's Toolbelt

> A curated directory of AI tools for fiction and nonfiction writers: drafting, editing, plotting, research, blurbs, audiobooks, and covers. Canonical site: https://writerstoolbelt.com.

Listings live as JSON in the repository under content/tools. The first category is the primary shelf. Pricing models are free, freemium, subscription, one-time, and usage-based. Summaries are editorial and name a limitation. The person who keeps this directory also builds ProseEngine. It is listed on the same terms as every other tool. Tools are alphabetical. There is no paid ranking.

## Categories

- [Drafting](https://writerstoolbelt.com/categories/drafting): Tools that help you produce prose: scene generators, manuscript editors with a model in the margin, and general assistants writers actually draft in. None of them owe you a finished book.
- [Editing](https://writerstoolbelt.com/categories/editing): Grammar, style, repetition, and story-level notes. These earn their place once there is a manuscript to argue with. A checker that flattens voice is still a checker.
- [Plotting and worldbuilding](https://writerstoolbelt.com/categories/plotting-worldbuilding): Outlines, codexes, lorebooks, and structure reports. Some of these write. Some only read the manuscript and hand back a map. Plottr itself is not here: that app deliberately ships without AI. Storysnap, from the same team, is.
- [Marketing and blurbs](https://writerstoolbelt.com/categories/marketing-blurbs): Back-cover copy, ads, newsletters, and launch pages. Useful for the words that sell the book. A poor place to write the book.
- [Research](https://writerstoolbelt.com/categories/research): Cited answers, paper finders, and notebooks that stay inside documents you upload. For nonfiction, and for novelists who refuse to invent a fact and hope.
- [Audiobooks and covers](https://writerstoolbelt.com/categories/audiobooks-covers): Narration, voiceover, and image tools for covers and promo art. Treat the output as a draft for the ears and eyes, and read the commercial terms before you publish it.

## Comparisons

- [ChatGPT vs Claude](https://writerstoolbelt.com/compare/chatgpt-vs-claude): ChatGPT is the broader workbench: brainstorming, blurbs, quick research, and whatever tool the current plan includes. Claude is the one many writers paste a chapter into when they want a steadier revision. Use either, and bring the pages. Do not expect either to remember a 90,000-word book you have not shown it.
- [ElevenLabs vs Speechify](https://writerstoolbelt.com/compare/elevenlabs-vs-speechify): Use Speechify to hear your draft, catch clunky sentences, and narrate something short. Use ElevenLabs when the audio is the product — a prototype audiobook, a trailer, a cloned reading voice — and only after you have read what the plan allows you to sell.
- [Grammarly vs ProWritingAid](https://writerstoolbelt.com/compare/grammarly-vs-prowritingaid): Use Grammarly for essays, email, queries, and nonfiction where a clean, conventional sentence is the goal. Use ProWritingAid when the unit of work is a book and you want repeats, pacing, and style across the whole file. Fiction writers who leave Grammarly on for dialogue often regret the voice it prefers.
- [Jasper vs Rytr](https://writerstoolbelt.com/compare/jasper-vs-rytr): Rytr is enough for an author producing a handful of blurbs, posts, and emails. Jasper earns its fee when marketing is a weekly job and more than one person has to sound like the same brand. Neither should draft the novel.
- [LivingWriter vs Novelcrafter](https://writerstoolbelt.com/compare/livingwriter-vs-novelcrafter): Choose LivingWriter if you want boards, a manuscript, screenplay formatting, and a little AI without an API account. Choose Novelcrafter if a series codex and the right to swap models, including a local one, matter more than bundled requests. Neither is a guided fiction co-writer in the Sudowrite sense. If you want named story buttons and the model included, look there instead.
- [Sudowrite vs NovelAI](https://writerstoolbelt.com/compare/sudowrite-vs-novelai): Pick Sudowrite for a guided novel workflow with a story bible and rewrite tools. Pick NovelAI if the model's voice, a lorebook, and fewer content refusals matter more than an editorial interface. If you need line-editing reports, neither is ProWritingAid.
- [Sudowrite vs Novelcrafter](https://writerstoolbelt.com/compare/sudowrite-vs-novelcrafter): Choose Sudowrite if you want fiction tools and model use bundled, and you would rather not manage API keys. Choose Novelcrafter if a series codex and the right to swap models — including a local one — matter more than a guided set of buttons. Plenty of writers keep both, which is a clue that neither is the whole job.
