Picture books

WhimKid

WhimKid turns an idea, a photo, or a saved character into an illustrated children's storybook. The site says the AI writes the story text and the illustrations, and that every page's text, layout, and pictures stay editable. Narration, music, a passworded share link, and export to PDF, images, audio, and video sit on the same book. New accounts get 100 welcome credits for 30 days, not an ongoing free plan, and the story, including a child's photo used as a reference, is sent to third-party models.

Best for

Adults making an editable picture book for a child, who will read the pages before sharing them and who accept that photos and story text go to fal.ai, DeepSeek, and MiniMax.

Pricing

Freemium. On 3 November 2026 the pricing page opened on Monthly: Lite $9.9 for 1,000 credits, Plus $28.9 for 3,000 (marked Popular), Pro $55.9 for 6,000, and Max $89.9 for 10,000. The cards mark those as 0%, 3%, 6%, and 9% off. With Yearly selected, the cards were Lite $99, Plus $289, Pro $559, and Max $899, and each added an up-to yearly line of 12,000, 36,000, 72,000, or 120,000 credits. The control says pay for 10 months and get a year. There is no free trial. New accounts receive 100 welcome credits for 30 days, with no card. The home page also says claim 10 credits each day, and that narration is 2 credits a request. Text edits, layout, and reading do not repeat a generation charge.

Writer's Toolbelt review

WhimKid

An illustrated children's storybook from an idea, a photo, or a saved character. 100 welcome credits for 30 days, then a plan from $9.9 a month.

Full disclosure: I also build ProseEngine, an AI fiction-writing tool listed on the same terms as everyone else.

What it is

WhimKid is a website that turns an idea, a photo, or a familiar character into an illustrated children's storybook. The home page's line is an AI storybook generator for an illustrated children's book. You choose the reader, a theme, and characters. WhimKid writes the story text and the illustrations. You can then edit the words, the layout, and the pictures, add narration or music, share a link, or export the book.

This review is what the public pages said on 3 November 2026. It does not come from an account, a generated book, or a checkout. The sample books and character pictures on the marketing pages are the vendor's.

The home page says WhimKid is an AI storybook generator by SylwairTech LLC, and that it is not affiliated with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series. The privacy policy, last updated 30 September 2026, names SylwairTech LLC as the data controller. The about page and the company page, last updated 15 September 2026, say the same operator and do not print a street address. Contact is support@whimkid.com. The terms, last updated 14 September 2026, say the account holder must be at least the age of majority where they live, and that children may not hold accounts. The introduction post, "Meet WhimKid," is dated 14 September 2026. The pages do not give an earlier date, and that post does not use the word launch.

Who it's for

  • Adults making a picture book for a child in their care. The about page names families, children's content creators, and someone giving a story as a gift. The safety page says children are the readers, and adults run the account, the uploads, the payment, the sharing, and the deletion.
  • People who want the pages to stay editable. The home page says you can revise text and layout, regenerate one illustration, reorder pages, add or remove pages, and restore an earlier illustration.
  • A weaker fit if you want a novel studio, a manuscript editor, or a model on your own key. None of those is described. It is also a weaker fit if a child would be the person at the keyboard. The terms forbid a child's account. It is a weaker fit if you will not send a photo or a story to fal.ai, DeepSeek, and MiniMax.

On this directory it is the listing on the children's books shelf. Studios on Write fiction write chapter prose for adult fiction. They do not assemble a picture book.

Key features in practice

The list is what the public pages say.

  • Five age bands. The home page lists ages 0 to 3, 4 to 6, 5 to 7, 7 to 9, and 9 to 12. The 4-to-6 band and the 5-to-7 band overlap. The page says the band guides vocabulary, story complexity, and page rhythm, and that every page stays editable.
  • A character library, then up to six in one book. You can save visual references for a child, a family member, or an original character, and select them again in a later book. One book can use up to six of those references. The page says you review character, scene, and prop assets before the pages are generated.
  • Art styles named on the page. The facts block says the styles include crayon doodle, pastel chalk, paper collage, and Chinese ink wash. The style row on the same page shows crayon doodle, anime hand-drawn, paper collage, and ink wash, and the line above it says other styles can guide the cover, the story pages, and the back cover.
  • A guided length, then an edit. The facts block says the guided flow plans 10 to 30 pages, and that you can still edit the words, the layout, the order, and the page count afterward.
  • Narration, music, and a reader. You can generate narration for one page or the whole book, then add background music. The home page says narration is 2 credits a request. A page-turn reader previews the cover, the spreads, and the back cover.
  • Sharing. A book is private until you create a link. The link can have a password and an expiry date, and you can revoke it. The safety page says anyone with the link and the password can view the book, and that a noindex instruction is not an access control.
  • Six export modes. PDF with or without text, images with or without text, audio with subtitles, or a video. The same section also names image packs, audio, and SRT and VTT subtitle files.
  • English and Chinese. The cookie policy says the site remembers English or Chinese. The how-to guide of 17 September 2026 says the creation flow supports English and Chinese story content. The guide's fox-and-lantern walkthrough is the vendor's example. The guide says it is not a record of a completed generation.

Pricing (checked 3 November 2026)

The pricing page opened on Monthly. Yearly is the other control. Its badge says "Save 2 months," and the line under the control says "Pay for 10 months and enjoy a full year." The welcome grant is not a fifth card. The FAQ says there is no time-limited free trial. New accounts receive 100 welcome credits, valid for 30 days, and no credit card is required.

Offer Price on 3 November 2026 Credits What the page adds
Welcome $0 100, for 30 days In the pricing FAQ and on the home page. No card. The home page also says "Claim 10 credits each day." It does not say whether those 10 sit inside the 100 or on top of them.
Lite $9.9/month 1,000 a month Card says 0% off. Concurrent tasks, all styles, music, narration, sharing, no watermark, a commercial license, and 365-day resource storage.
Plus $28.9/month 3,000 a month Marked Popular. Card says 3% off. The same feature list as Lite.
Pro $55.9/month 6,000 a month Card says 6% off. The same feature list.
Max $89.9/month 10,000 a month Card says 9% off. The same feature list.

With the Yearly control selected, the same cards read Lite $99 a year, Plus $289, Pro $559, and Max $899. Each is ten times the monthly price, which matches the "pay for 10 months" line. The cards were marked 17% off and save $19.8, 19% off and save $67.4, 22% off and save $153.8, and 24% off and save $289. Each card still listed the monthly credit count, and added an "up to" line of twelve times that count: 12,000, 36,000, 72,000, and 120,000 credits a year. The FAQ says annual plans are billed once per year.

The percent labels match the per-credit gap against Lite, rounded. $28.9 for 3,000 credits is about 3% less per credit than $9.9 for 1,000. $55.9 for 6,000 is about 6% less. $89.9 for 10,000 is about 9% less. Lite against itself is 0%.

The home page says credits pay for script, illustration, and narration, and that text edits, page layout, and reading do not repeat those charges. Narration is 2 credits a request. It also says to check the displayed generation cost, and that the number of books depends on page count, regenerations, and narration. A credit cost for a whole book is not printed. The home page points at a credit center for extra packs. The public pricing page does not print pack prices.

Paid plans renew until you cancel. The terms, last updated 14 September 2026, say credits have no cash value, do not transfer, and do not roll over unless a plan says they do. Unused credits are not refundable in cash. Cancelling stops the next renewal and does not refund the period already started. You keep access and remaining credits until that period ends. A downgrade starts at the next cycle. The refund policy, last updated 15 September 2026, says a failed generation returns the reserved credits to the balance, which is not a refund to the card. A payment review goes to support@whimkid.com. A statutory right that the law does not let them waive still applies. Checkout is a payment provider. The privacy policy names Stripe, Creem, and Waffo, and says WhimKid does not store the full card number.

USD on whimkid.com/pricing on 3 November 2026. The page opened on Monthly, so the bars are those prices. Lite is $9.9, Plus is $28.9, Pro is $55.9, and Max is $89.9. Welcome credits are $0 and last 30 days, so the free bar is not an ongoing plan. With Yearly selected, the cards were Lite $99, Plus $289, Pro $559, and Max $899, so those are not drawn as monthly bars. Each yearly card also said a monthly credit count and an up-to yearly total of twelve times that count.

The pricing page, captured 3 November 2026, opened on Monthly. Lite is $9.9, Plus is $28.9 and marked Popular, Pro is $55.9, and Max is $89.9. The Yearly control sits above the cards.

Using it as a writer

  1. Read the public facts before you create an account. Five age bands, up to six characters in one book, a 10-to-30-page guided range, and six export modes are on the home page. The sample books there are the vendor's.
  2. Count the welcome grant as 100 credits for 30 days. The pricing FAQ says that is not a free trial and that no card is required. The home page's "Claim 10 credits each day" is a separate sentence. The page does not do the arithmetic for you.
  3. Read both controls before you pay. The page opens on Monthly. Yearly is $99, $289, $559, and $899, and those cards say "up to" 12,000, 36,000, 72,000, and 120,000 credits a year.
  4. Treat a child's photo as the sensitive file. The privacy policy says you confirm you are the parent or guardian, or that you have their permission. The image is stored and sent to fal.ai to make the pictures. Delete it in the app when you are done. The safety page says there is no promised automatic deletion date.
  5. Ask for account deletion by email. support@whimkid.com, from the account address. Stories and images can be deleted in the app. There is no self-serve account-deletion button.

Strengths

  • The product is described as a book, not a single image. Text, layout, page order, narration, a share link, and an export are on the same pages.
  • The prices are numbers. $9.9, $28.9, $55.9, and $89.9 a month, with the credit counts on the same cards. The yearly catalog is ten times those monthly prices.
  • The route for the content is named. The privacy policy lists fal.ai for images, DeepSeek for story text, and MiniMax for narration, and says WhimKid does not train its own models on uploads or stories and does not sell the data or use it for ads.
  • The adult line is repeated. Terms, safety, about, and company all say the account is for an adult and the child is the reader.
  • Sharing has controls. Password, expiry, and revoke are described, and the safety page says the book is private until you make a link.

Weaknesses

  • The free path ends. One hundred credits last 30 days. The pricing FAQ says that is not a trial and not an ongoing free plan. After that, generation is a subscription. The home page's daily claim of 10 credits is not explained against the 100.
  • A child's photo leaves WhimKid. fal.ai receives reference images. DeepSeek receives the story. MiniMax receives the text for narration. Those companies' terms apply. The policy says WhimKid does not train its own models. It does not set those providers' training rules.
  • Deletion of the account is an email. Stories and images can be removed in the app. The account itself cannot, on the privacy policy's own wording. Deleted files may remain in encrypted backups until those backups cycle.
  • Two storage sentences. Every paid card says "365-day resource storage." The privacy policy says story content and uploaded images are kept until you delete them or delete the story. The safety page says there is no fixed automatic deletion period for a child's reference images. A buyer cannot tell which clock a photo follows.
  • The age bands overlap. 4 to 6 and 5 to 7 are both on the list. The page does not say what happens if a reader fits both.
  • Copyright is not promised. The rights page, last updated 15 September 2026, says you may use the generated text and illustrations commercially, subject to the terms and to the AI providers. It also says WhimKid does not grant exclusive rights and does not guarantee copyright protection. Uploaded material stays yours. You give WhimKid a licence to store and process it to run the service.
  • No hands-on independent review turned up on 3 November 2026. Launchtory has a profile that calls itself independent, says it restates the public website, and says the analysis can be AI-assisted. It is not an account of someone making a book. WhimKid's own comparison post of 29 September 2026 ranks WhimKid first. That is the company's page.

How it compares

  • WhimKid vs ProseEngine. ProseEngine is made by the person who runs this site. See the disclosure above. It is a fiction studio for a novel, with a codex and scene generation, priced in euros, with a free plan. It is not a picture-book generator. We are not scoring that matchup.
  • WhimKid vs a drafting studio. Novelcrafter, Sudowrite, and the other studios on Write fiction are built for chapter prose. WhimKid's own pages describe a 10-to-30-page illustrated book, narration, and a PDF. If the job is a children's picture book, those studios live on Write fiction. See the Novelcrafter review.
  • WhimKid vs a cover tool. Canva Magic Studio and the other cover listings make jacket art and promo images. WhimKid's export list is the whole book: PDF, image packs, audio, subtitles, and video. A cover tool does not describe that workflow.

Verdict

WhimKid is a public picture-book generator with a price on the page and a privacy policy that names the companies which see a child's photo. On 3 November 2026 the monthly cards were $9.9, $28.9, $55.9, and $89.9, the yearly catalog was ten times those amounts, and new accounts were offered 100 credits for 30 days. The pages say you can edit every page after generation, and they say the account is for an adult.

Use the welcome credits, if you want them, before you start a subscription. Do not upload a child's photo until you have read the fal.ai sentence. Do not treat "365-day resource storage" and "kept until you delete it" as the same promise. And do not hand the account to the child. The terms say the child does not get one.

FAQ

Is WhimKid free? For 30 days of credits, not as an ongoing plan. The pricing FAQ says there is no time-limited free trial. A new account receives 100 welcome credits, valid for 30 days, with no card. The home page also says "Claim 10 credits each day" and does not say how that line relates to the 100.

How much does it cost? On 3 November 2026 the page opened on Monthly: Lite $9.9 for 1,000 credits, Plus $28.9 for 3,000, Pro $55.9 for 6,000, and Max $89.9 for 10,000. Plus was marked Popular. With Yearly selected the cards were $99, $289, $559, and $899, ten times the monthly price, and each added an "up to" yearly credit line of 12,000, 36,000, 72,000, or 120,000. Narration is 2 credits a request. A price for one finished book is not printed.

Does WhimKid train on photos or stories? The privacy policy, last updated 30 September 2026, says WhimKid does not use uploaded images or story content to train its own models, and does not sell the data or use it for ads. The same policy says the content is sent to fal.ai for images, DeepSeek for story text, and MiniMax for narration, and that those providers' terms apply. There is no switch in the product that changes that.

Who owns the book? The terms say what you upload stays yours, and that you may use the generated text and illustrations, including commercially, subject to the terms and to the AI providers. The rights page says WhimKid does not claim the book, and does not promise that the output is exclusive or protected by copyright.

Can a child use it? The terms say no. The account holder must be at least the age of majority where they live. Children may not hold accounts. The safety page says a child does not need an account to read a book an adult shares.

Who runs WhimKid? SylwairTech LLC. The privacy policy, the terms, the about page, and the company page all say so. They do not print a street address. Support, privacy requests, and deletion go to support@whimkid.com. The introduction post is dated 14 September 2026.
