After the draft exists

AutoCrit

Fiction editing reports for dialogue, pacing, repetition, and overused phrasing, plus a story analyzer and an AI reader you can steer with instructions. The reports compare your draft with genre tendencies, which is a clue, not a verdict. It will not write the book for you.

Best for

Novelists who want genre-aware notes on a complete draft, not a chatbot that continues the scene.

Pricing

Subscription. Paid membership for fiction reports and story tools. Confirm the current plan names on the site.

What it is

AutoCrit is an online manuscript editing and writing studio. The home page calls it "the smartest way to get from draft to done": you plan, write, analyse and polish in one place, "fully unlimited, with no meters to worry about and no credit packs to buy." It grew out of editing analysis for fiction. The pricing page describes its guidance as "based on extensive research into real-world publishing standards".

Who it's for

  • Fiction writers revising a draft who want concrete, repeatable checks on adverbs, word choice, readability, pacing and similar issues.
  • Writers who prefer flat pricing over AI credits.
  • Planners. The Story Builder covers characters, worlds and beat sheets.

The site mentions both fiction and nonfiction writers, but most of its framing (genre guides, story architecture) is aimed at fiction.

Key features in practice

  • Story Builder. "Plan and prep your books" with character and world craft, integrated beat sheets and genre-specific story guidance.
  • Interactive editing tools. The free plan includes Adverbs, Word Choice and Readability. Pro unlocks all of them.
  • Summary Report. Pro adds a summary report with an "AutoCrit Score" and editing recommendations.
  • Noteboards and cards. Digital boards next to your manuscript for planning and research, included free.
  • Unlimited writing. The free plan is a "fully-featured writing platform with no word limits".
  • Academy and challenges. The site also runs writing courses and challenges.

Using it as a writer

AutoCrit works best as a revision pass after you have a complete draft, not while you are still discovering the story.

  1. Import a few chapters first, not the whole book. Run the free tools (Adverbs, Word Choice, Readability) on your opening chapters, where agents and readers judge you fastest.
  2. Fix patterns, not instances. If the report flags the same crutch word fifty times, that is a habit to fix across the manuscript, not fifty separate edits. Note your top three habits and search for them in later chapters.
  3. Treat the benchmarks as a conversation. AutoCrit compares your prose with published fiction. If you are deliberately writing a sparse thriller or a lush fantasy, some flags will be features of your voice, and you should ignore them on purpose.
  4. Plan the next book in the Story Builder. Once revision is done, the beat sheets and noteboards help you outline the sequel in the same place, which keeps series details close at hand.
  5. Decide on Pro after one full revision cycle. The free plan shows the feedback style. Pro is worth paying for when you want the Summary Report and the full set of checks across a whole manuscript.

A sensible budget plan is to subscribe for an intensive revision month, or take annual Pro if you revise year-round. Because there are no credits, you won't be rationing reports during your heaviest editing weeks, which is a real advantage over metered AI tools.

Strengths

  • Generous free plan with no word cap.
  • Flat pricing with no credits.
  • Fiction-specific analysis that turns vague advice into measurable checks.
  • Planning and editing together, so you don't need a separate outliner.

  • Story planning tools7/10
  • Fiction focus9/10

Weaknesses

  • Monthly Pro is pricey compared with annual billing.
  • Benchmarks are guidance, not rules. Strong voices often break them on purpose.
  • Fewer integrations than mainstream grammar tools such as Grammarly or ProWritingAid, which live in your browser and word processor.

How it compares

  • AutoCrit vs ProWritingAid. ProWritingAid offers broad style and grammar reports across many apps. AutoCrit is a self-contained studio focused on fiction benchmarks and planning.
  • AutoCrit vs Fictionary. Fictionary looks at story structure scene by scene. AutoCrit is stronger at the prose level.
  • AutoCrit vs Marlowe. Marlowe produces a one-off AI manuscript report. AutoCrit is a place you write and revise continuously.

Verdict

AutoCrit is a solid, honest pick for fiction writers in revision. Start on the free plan to see whether its feedback style works for you. If it does, annual Pro at $15 a month is good value with no credit anxiety.

FAQ

Is AutoCrit free? There is a Free Forever plan with an unlimited-length editor and some editing tools. Pro unlocks everything.

How much is AutoCrit Pro? $30 a month billed monthly, or $15 a month billed annually (checked 14 October 2026).

Does AutoCrit use credits? No. The home page says there are no meters or credit packs.

Is it only for fiction? The site says it serves fiction and nonfiction writers, but much of the tooling is built around fiction.

  • Drafting

    Claude

A general assistant that writers often prefer for long passages, tone, and a calmer revision pass. Projects can hold notes and chapters you upload. It is still a chat, not a novel app: continuity across a whole book is only as good as the pages you put in front of it.

Best for Drafting and revision when you want a careful reader more than a plot machine.

    FreemiumFiction and nonfiction
  • Editing

    DeepL Write

Rewrite suggestions from the company behind DeepL translation. It is aimed at clearer phrasing, not plot. Particularly useful if you draft between languages or want a second wording that is conservative rather than clever. It will happily smooth a sentence that was supposed to be sharp.

Best for Nonfiction clarity, and writers moving between languages who want phrasing help rather than a story engine.

    FreemiumNonfiction
  • Editing

    Fictionary

Story-structure software that visualizes a story arc and includes Edwina, an AI instructor for scene-level feedback. The useful part is seeing whether the draft has a shape. The classes, if you buy them, are people. Do not confuse the two.

Best for Novelists who want structure feedback while outlining and revising, with an optional human class on the side.
