After the draft exists

Marlowe

Analytical feedback on plot, pacing, character, and how a draft compares with patterns in commercial fiction. Marlowe does not rewrite your sentences. That restraint is the product: a developmental read in minutes, with the usual risk that a statistical 'beat' is not what your book is doing.

Best for

Fiction writers who want a fast developmental read and do not want the tool to touch the prose.

Pricing

Usage-based. You pay for manuscript analysis from Authors A.I. A subscription may sit alongside single reports; it does not generate prose.

Writer's Toolbelt review

Marlowe

Analytical AI for fiction: a developmental-feedback report on your manuscript. It never writes a word.

What it is

Marlowe, by Authors A.I., is "analytical AI for fiction". It "reads your manuscript and gives you expert-level developmental feedback on plot, character, pacing, story beats, narrative drive, and theme". Crucially, it "doesn't write or rewrite a single word of your book." The company says it was "trained on legally obtained, rights-cleared novels", that it doesn't train on your manuscript, and that you can delete your data at any time. It benchmarks your book "against bestsellers in your specific genre".

Who it's for

  • Novelists with a finished draft who want a developmental read before paying a human editor or querying.
  • Writers wary of generative AI. It analyses and never generates.
  • Indie authors who want market positioning (the Market Fit report).

Key features in practice

  • Developmental report on plot, character, pacing, story beats, narrative drive and theme.
  • Genre-aware benchmarking for romance, thriller, fantasy, literary fiction and more.
  • Market Fit report: market intelligence for one manuscript.
  • No generation. There's no rewrite button by design.
  • Data control. It doesn't train on your manuscript, and you can delete your data.

Using it as a writer

  1. Run Basic first to see the report style.
  2. Buy Pro after a full draft and your own first revision, so the report catches what you can't see.
  3. Read the report against your intent. Benchmarks show how bestsellers in your genre usually behave, not what you must do.
  4. Bring the report to your editor to make paid editing time more focused.
  5. Run it again on the revised draft, budgeting one report per major draft.

Strengths

  • Pay per manuscript, no subscription.
  • Analysis-only design, so your words stay yours.
  • Rights-cleared training and no training on your manuscript, per the vendor.
  • Genre benchmarks.

Weaknesses

  • Snapshot, not a workspace. You revise elsewhere.
  • Fiction only.
  • Benchmarks can nudge you toward convention.

How it compares

  • Marlowe vs Fictionary. Fictionary is an interactive structure workspace on a subscription. Marlowe is a one-off report.
  • Marlowe vs AutoCrit. AutoCrit focuses on prose-level analysis and planning.
  • Marlowe vs StorySnap. Compare the two reports on the same manuscript.

  • Editing

    AutoCrit

Fiction editing reports for dialogue, pacing, repetition, and overused phrasing, plus a story analyzer and an AI reader you can steer with instructions. The reports compare your draft with genre tendencies, which is a clue, not a verdict. It will not write the book for you.

Best for Novelists who want genre-aware notes on a complete draft, not a chatbot that continues the scene.

  • Drafting

    Claude

A general assistant that writers often prefer for long passages, tone, and a calmer revision pass. Projects can hold notes and chapters you upload. It is still a chat, not a novel app: continuity across a whole book is only as good as the pages you put in front of it.

Best for Drafting and revision when you want a careful reader more than a plot machine.

    DeepL Write

Rewrite suggestions from the company behind DeepL translation. It is aimed at clearer phrasing, not plot. Particularly useful if you draft between languages or want a second wording that is conservative rather than clever. It will happily smooth a sentence that was supposed to be sharp.

Best for Nonfiction clarity, and writers moving between languages who want phrasing help rather than a story engine.
