QuillBot

EditingFreemiumFiction and nonfiction

A paraphraser, summarizer, and grammar checker. Legitimate on a sentence you wrote and cannot hear anymore. It is also an easy way to launder someone else's wording, which is not a writing practice this directory recommends. Summaries of your own research notes are the kinder use.

Best for

Restating your own sentences, or summarizing source notes you are about to rewrite in your voice.

Pricing

Freemium. Free paraphrase and grammar with limits. Premium raises those limits and adds modes.

Writer's Toolbelt review

QuillBot

A paraphraser-first toolkit with grammar checking, plagiarism checks, summaries and citations. Cheap on annual billing.

Premium per month, billed annually

words/month plagiarism checks

What it is

QuillBot is a toolkit of AI writing utilities: Paraphraser, Grammar Checker, AI Detector, Plagiarism Checker, AI Humanizer, AI Chat, Summarizer, Translate, Citation Generator and an image generator. There are extensions for Chrome and Word. The Chrome extension shows a 4.7 rating and "6M+ users".

Who it's for

  • Nonfiction and academic writers who rephrase, summarise and cite.
  • Second-language writers who need alternative phrasings.
  • Bloggers who want a cheap all-in-one toolkit.

Novelists will get limited value. Paraphrasing creative prose can erase voice.

Key features in practice

  • Paraphraser with modes. Full access on Premium.
  • Grammar Checker with advanced suggestions on Premium.
  • Plagiarism prevention: 25,000 words a month on Premium.
  • Summarizer and Citation Generator for research workflows.
  • AI Detector and Humanizer. Use with care. Detection is unreliable in general.
  • QuillBot for Word and Chrome.

Using it as a writer

  1. Paraphrase research notes so they don't creep into your prose verbatim.
  2. Summarise sources to build your notes, then check the originals.
  3. Use the citation generator for nonfiction references, and check the formatting.
  4. Don't paraphrase your fiction. Use Grammar Checker only.

Strengths

  • Cheap annual Premium.
  • Broad toolkit.
  • Free tier.

  • Editing

    AutoCrit

Fiction editing reports for dialogue, pacing, repetition, and overused phrasing, plus a story analyzer and an AI reader you can steer with instructions. The reports compare your draft with genre tendencies, which is a clue, not a verdict. It will not write the book for you.

Best for Novelists who want genre-aware notes on a complete draft, not a chatbot that continues the scene.

    SubscriptionFiction
  • Drafting

    Claude

A general assistant that writers often prefer for long passages, tone, and a calmer revision pass. Projects can hold notes and chapters you upload. It is still a chat, not a novel app: continuity across a whole book is only as good as the pages you put in front of it.

Best for Drafting and revision when you want a careful reader more than a plot machine.

  • Editing

    DeepL Write

Rewrite suggestions from the company behind DeepL translation. It is aimed at clearer phrasing, not plot. Particularly useful if you draft between languages or want a second wording that is conservative rather than clever. It will happily smooth a sentence that was supposed to be sharp.

Best for Nonfiction clarity, and writers moving between languages who want phrasing help rather than a story engine.
